    Food Assistance Around the World

    Food Assistance in America:

There are a number of options available to Americans for food assistance, government aid, county/church/community food banks, independent food pantries and other organizations.
Below is a list of the Government assistance available and a state by state directory of Assistance programs for food.

    • Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) for low income individuals and families.
On October 1, 2008, the Food Stamp Program’s name was formally changed to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
There are millions of Americans who rely on SNAP regularly or in times of emergency and economic hardship.
Click HERE for information on how it works, if you'd qualify and general information on SNAP
    • Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP)
The Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) serves about 599,000 low-income people each month, and is the only USDA nutrition program that provides monthly food assistance specially targeted at low-income seniors.
      Senior Supplemental Food Program
    • The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP)
The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) is a means-tested federal program that provides food commodities at no cost to families in need of short-term hunger relief through emergency food providers.
      More information here.
    • Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) (Children's Assistance)
The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) provides free meals and snacks to low-income children during the summer months and long school vacations. Child food insecurity continues to be a significant problem, with over 16 million children in America at risk of hunger.
      More information on SFSP

I was introduced to a website called NeedyMeds.org and it has helped me a great deal. Most beneficial is the Universal Drug Discount Card they provide (with no obligation to provide any personal info)

Below is an "About Us" copied from their site as well as a list of other services they provide.

NeedyMeds is a 501(c)(3) non-profit information resource devoted to helping people in need find assistance programs to help them afford their medications and costs related to health care. NeedyMeds was founded in 1997 by Richard Sagall, MD and Libby Overly, MSW when Libby was working as a medical social worker in a rural Mississippi. She developed a database of PAP information to help her meet the needs of her clients. When she described this database to Rich, a friend with a medical practice in Bangor, Maine, he conceptualized making the information available on the Internet to make it available to more people. This was the beginning of NeedyMeds.

NeedyMeds' mission is to be the best source of accurate, comprehensive and up-to-date information on programs that help people facing problems paying for medications and health care; to assist those in need in applying to programs; and to provide health-related education using innovative methods.

NeedyMeds is funded by small grants, donations, sponsorships, subscriptions to PAPTracker, and syndication of various database information. NeedyMeds also works with the patient assistance programs of several pharmaceutical distributors.
