No Drug Is Working For Me Anymore, Even Though I Don't Abuse Them
    #1
    Question
I have allergies and I found over-the-counter Clairitin, Reactin, etc. not working (it's always been that way). I have found Benadryl to be effective until recently - it would help with my sneezing, itchiness, runny nose, etc. Now it won't work anymore even though I'm not abusing it nor am I taking it constantly.

The same thing is happening with Clonazepam. I used to take between 2 to 3 mg daily (doctor's prescription; we started low but increased dosage overtime) and now that's not even working - today, I took 4 mg, hoping it would help me calm down enough for a meeting I had with someone but it didn't. I told the person that I took the Clonazepam and they could see that it wasn't working. When I got home, about an hour ago, I took the remaining pills - I took the remaining 6 mg, making it a total of 10 mg! I have never done that before but I doubt it's going to do anything since it hasn't been working; a couple of weeks ago I took it for an appointment and it barely worked - if I were to give it a grade on its effectiveness, I would give it a 50%. but even then, that's being generous - I feel like giving it a 40% since it didn't do much. I don't expect to get high nor do I drink or do other drugs but it's pissing me off that the drugs I take, even Benadryl (and Aleve - I had a sprained ankle and it didn't help with that at all, even though it was supposed to and I was wearing a brace for my ankle!) aren't working.

Has anyone ever had a problem like this before? Where it seems all drugs they take stop working? I don't know what to do; I am on a couple of medications that also treat seizures that are not benzo-related so quitting Clonazepam cold turkey has no risk of having a Grand-Mal Seizure for me; I know this from past experience when I had an issue with Ativan, it was a similar issue that nobody, not even the pharmacist, could explain.

My hopes are blighted, my heart is broken, my life a burden, everything around me is sad and mournful; earth has become distasteful to me, and human voices distract me. It is mercy to let me die, for if I live I shall lose my reason and become mad.

    sounds like tolerance/dependence.

Even though I didn't take Benadryl constantly, I can still develop a tolerance to it even if it's only once a week or once every 10 days? I figured there is a tolerance to Clonazepam; that's why I'm abstaining from that drug for a while (I am aware that their are other withdrawal symptoms besides seizures; I can put up with the other withdrawal symptoms, I have before and I am ready to do it again).

    Could be liver trouble.

I would have your liver checked if this is not tolerance.

When multiple drugs that do not share a mode of action cease to function you have to look to the only commonality; absorption. That is where I would look. Are you nutritionally sound?

I doubt it's liver trouble, but I'll check anyway, even though I know it will involve a blood test and I am TERRIFIED of needles.

What do you mean nutritionally sound? I have a healthy diet and exercise. I've been stressing a lot due to an upcoming job interview (happening tomorrow) and other family-related things that are out of my control, but do not involve me; they mainly involve making me feel like everything is my fault (being snapped at by my mom now an uncle whose visiting for a week; he treated me like crap the last time he was here and spent most of his time at my mom's house - which was last year - he's visiting my mom and I, yes I live with my mom - if I could move out I would but right now I don't have the money, no other family living in the province I live in (I live in Canada), and no friends - I have been bullied all of my life and people still bully me, I guess because I have a mild form of Asperger's Syndrome and social anxiety (which is due to the bullying I went through and still go through by people that are adults - I'm an adult too, by the way). I've tried getting a place on my own but taxes are very high here and the housing won't support me since when they meet my mom she puts on the charm and make them believe she doesn't do anything wrong - she has Narcissistic Personality Disorder, which she of course denies having, yet ironically she's dating someone who does have that disorder and treats her exactly the same way she treats me! And when she complains about how the person treats her and mentions that the person is a narcissist I agree; I pointed out once that the person treats her the same way she treats me but she angrily denied it, which doesn't surprise me.

I asked about the nutritional aspect because if you had absorption issues there would probably be some nutritional deficiencies that could verify, but that doesn't sound like the problem if your diet is good. There may be a stress component that could change the way you perceive these substances to work; it sounds like your going through tough times and dealing with difficult people.

I also have been having this problem. I was using clonazolam earlier this year. Went through terrible withdrawal during detox in a clinic. Full delirium and multiple high grade fevers. I ended up with Rhabdomyolysis. since then, I have been to the hospital and propofol did not work when they tried to put me out to relocate my shoulder. Nitrous did not work both times I went to the dentist. Some drugs work, but a lot of them give me no effect. it seems like some changes have taken place in my body. I hope they are not permanant, but they have been long term. It seems like l have a tolerance to most drugs now where I never had this problem before. The rc benzos seem to have some serious after effects, even after long periods of sobriety.
I am aware that I am a drug addict and spend most of my time sober. I go to school and work, not to mention probation. I still dabble, uncertain of my beliefs on psychedelics and sobriety. I am terrified though if I have to have surgery or something since most drugs have no effect on me currently.

Dr. Extract, thanks for your input; I have no idea why nothing is working right now. It's happened before when stress was high and then randomly worked again even though I was still going through stress - it worked so well it knocked me out even though I took the same dose I was taking at the time and nothing else (I didn't take any drugs or alcohol with it nor do I smoke). I don't drink so there is no chance of cross-tolerance either. I have no idea what's going on. It might have something to do with weight gain, I think I gained some weight but not much (I'm usually 135 lbs. and I'm 5'4" - I'm a 28 year old woman by the way).

Psychedalienation - you have no right to make that post, it's rude and I did take that many mg - that's why I made that post by the way.

scribbles - good luck with your surgery; I hope something works for you. Did you tell them that you have found other drugs and nitrous oxide to be ineffective in the past?

I am not sure if I will need surgery yet. I will definitely tell them if that is the case. I am sorry to hear that you are going through this right now. It really could be a combination of stress and tolerance. Benzos work, but their effects can vary. I know that with major anxiety sometimes benzos do not bring it down like they are supposed to but that is a large dose. Are you doing therapy? I do not really believe that therapy works, but I had reached a deep depression earlier this year. I actually got some help from the other people going through therapy with me. It reassured me to know I am not the only one that feels this way. I am feeling better now. It is good to try other things when medication is not working. I hope you can find something that helps you.

I have a book called "From Panic To Power". My psychiatrist recommended it and I am now on a wait-list for medicinal marijuana for anxiety reasons, since anti-depressants and anti-psychotics make my seizures worse even though I'm on anti-seizure medication. The seizures I have are called Simple-Partial Seizures and they start with a quote that Lucy (from Peanuts) says to Linus (from Peanuts) or sometimes it can be Peppermint Patty (from Peanuts) saying something to Charlie Brown (from Peanuts). I have looked at every Peanuts episode I could find, I even watched one online and can't find the quote (once the seizure is over I can't recall what the quote is exactly - I even once had it while on the computer, I tried typing the quote out but my body froze and I couldn't move until it was over and that has never happened before - I thought if I could find the quote it would make the seizures not as bad since when the quote happens, I then get this intense overwhelming sense of fear). The quote is the "aura" and the overwhelming sense of fear is the seizure (my neurologist told me that; my neurologist is also the one who put me on anti-seizure medication that do work, but the Simple-Partial Seizures are almost impossible to control, he told me that and he's right).

I have also tried therapy in the past but I had horrible psychologists and psychiatrists - the psychiatrist I am now seeing will only see me with my mom even though I'm 28 years old - he is refusing to see me by myself because I told him I have a brain injury; I have had the brain injury since birth and am able to walk and talk like other people, I have never had to do basic courses in school (all of the courses I did were academic) and I went to college and completed an Administrative Specialist program with a 96% average, plus I completed two extra courses, Records Management and Control (I got 98% in that) and Medical Terminology and Transcription (I got 92% in that). As soon as any psychologist or psychiatrist finds out I have a brain injury (they always do, they look up my medical history) they refuse to see me unless someone is with me, which angers me since I don't misbehave or act in an inappropriate manner in any way. My doctor plus other doctors I have seen over the years that are not in the mental health field have seen me on my own and they had no issue with the fact that I have a brain injury. My doctor used to work in a mental health hospital so he has some psychiatry background but he doesn't treat my mom nor has he seen her with me; he knows me well and he doesn't understand why psychologists and psychiatrists are treating me this way. This is why I am going to try to work on these mental health issues by myself; I'm waiting to be approved for medicinal marijuana (I don't even use it illegally or any other drug now, except for the benzodiazepines that I mentioned in previous posts) and once I'm approved I hopefully won't have to see the psychiatrist that referred me to the medicinal marijuana clinic ever again.

I am sorry that you reached a deep depression this year (this has happened to me several times but it's pointless to tell anyone where I am - in the medical field or in real life, this isn't just my experience, it's the same experience a lot of people I know in the province I live in have had). I'm glad you were able to get help from other people that were going through the therapy with you. I wish I was as lucky as you to have something like that and I'm glad you feel better now.

I hope you don't need the surgery but if you do, good luck.

Both Klonis and Benadryl are highly anti-cholinergenic. They inhibit acetyl-l-choline, the primary neurotransmitter for focus and memory. They’re finding long term use of both is linked to Alzheimer’s, so make sure you take a good b-vitamin and get choline in your diet, ie eggs, soy, etc.

Thanks for the info; I am already eating the foods you mentioned (plus other nutritious foods), exercising, etc. as well as ensuring I receive the correct vitamins. It's good to know that I'm doing those things right.

Something to note, while it may or may not be applicable here, is that many women report a drop in the anxiolytic effectiveness of benzos during their "time of the month". I see clonazepam specifically mentioned in many of these situations. Must be due to hormonal shifts; possibly downstream neurohormone changes surrounding menstruation. Just thought I'd drop that little thought here before calling it a night.
