olice have discovered a $5.5 million fully operational drug lab in Adelaide?s south.

The bust is one of the largest in the state?s history with 120 kilograms of powder, believed to be methamphetamine, seized by investigators following a search of a home at Morphett Vale.

Members of the elite Special Tasks and Rescue (STAR) group stormed the residential property and arrested two unsuspecting men inside.

Among the material seized was about 11 kilograms of what police believe to be crystalline methamphetamine, commonly referred to as "ice".

Further chemicals and powders located at the scene are yet to be analysed.

?This seizure forms part of SAPOL?s overarching methamphetamine response plan known as Operation ATLAS,? Detective Superintendent Mark Trenwith said.

?We specifically target people manufacturing ?ice? to reduce supply and the associated serious harm to the community.

?This is a significant seizure and will potentially prevent kilograms of ice worth millions of dollars hitting the streets.

"It's a recipe for disaster."

The two men arrested are expected to appear in the Christies Beach Magistrates Court charged with manufacturing a large commercial quantity of a controlled drug, namely methamphetamine.

They are a 36-year-old man from Seaview Downs and a 40-year-old man who is believed to have recently travelled to Australia on a US passport.

Investigations continue and Drug and Organised Crime Task Force officers are expected to remain at the premises today to safely dismantle the laboratory.

?Clandestine drug laboratories pose significant risk to the community and contain corrosive, flammable and toxic chemicals that are often associated with fires and explosions,? Detective Superintendent Trenwith said.

?This is a timely reminder to the community that people who seek to produce illicit drugs can face penalties up to $500,000 and or life imprisonment."

The two men did not apply for bail and their next court appearance will not be until July 2019 due to the large amount of evidence investigators have to go through.
