FDA confirms Adderall shortage as largest manufacturer warns of delays through end of the year

Excerpt:
The Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday confirmed a nationwide shortage of the attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder medication Adderall, more than two months after some pharmacies reported difficulties filling prescriptions.

The shortage affects the immediate-release form of Adderall, a stimulant that helps manage ADHD symptoms.

The FDA said in a statement that it was in “frequent communication with all manufacturers of amphetamine mixed salts, and one of those companies, Teva, is experiencing ongoing intermittent manufacturing delays.”

Teva Pharmaceuticals is the country’s largest manufacturer of Adderall. It first reported delays in filling orders in August, attributing them to a labor shortage on its packaging line that it said had since been resolved.

i'm wondering if we'll see a noticeable increase in stimulant related overdoses. presumably some people will go to street drugs, and there are documented cases of fake adderall circulating around. college campuses are a prime market for such counterfeits. more young people dying...

Not sure, almost all fake adderall is methamphetamine, which isn't much more acutely toxic at least on a mg to mg basis as amphetamine.

I bought fake adderall a few times (pressed adderall), purported to be 30mg generic adderall. I knew they were fake and that they contained methamphetamine when i bought them.

They feel like they contain 15-50mg of methamphetamine, with an average being maybe 25mg. Honestly they were fairly well formulated, but they are certainly stronger than adderall. But the amount of pills you'd have to take to produce an overdose wouldn't really be that much more than the a similar number of adderall.

However i hadn't heard of the shortage though. The bigger risk isn't the risk of people getting fake adderall and OD'ing on meth. The real risk is that a significant supply shortage of adderall might drive someone to obtain crystal meth and begin a downward spiral.

good point. it is mostly pressed methamph, and you're right that they are formulated quite well.

i do worry, however, that copycat producers could latch on if the market for the presses expands. i don't expect their quality control to be like that of the mexican TCOs.

that said, it's still improbable that such a market could open in the first place. adderall XR seems unaffected, people will manage fine for 6-12 months. perhaps it'll boost sales for the pharma sedative producers. get your stocks now lol

Market might expand for those, the Indian producers of pressed pills probably being the worst since they have a habit of putting random shit in pressed adderall, like tramadol and ketamine.

This example of an Indian pressed adderall actually contained fentanyl:

I remember cracking up when I saw this a while back due to what was written in the experience notes, "Felt different than prescription Adderall, was a more subtle high with longer timeframe, with headache afterwards.'' I think Indian manufacturers of these pressed pills are under the impression that people take adderall to get high, so they throw in random recreational drugs like opioids and ketamine. The mexicans seem to have a better understanding of what these pills are used for and formulate them with a fairly proportionate amount of methamphetamine. But they are certainly more inconsistent in dosage than a pharma product. Even among the same batch I've had instances where I consumed 4 tablets for a fairly moderate effect, and on another occasion took 2 pills in the morning and couldn't sleep all night.

But really the most imminent risk with any serious prescription stimulant shortage would be people turning to street meth and developing a serious problem that turns their life upside down.

agreed.

i think cocaine is more easily acquired than meth by any given corporate yuppie, so we may see some people turning to that too.

it's arguably less destructive than meth, addiction wise. but the cocaine supply is also significantly worse than meth in terms of purity and potency.

but i still think that with the XR supply unaffected, people will be fine and we probably won't see too much illicit use

I wonder if the fakes will end up making it into the legal market or if they already have. Another issue is people sourcing the street getting fakes and then dropping hot urine, that will then have them prohibited from getting their medication and thus driven to the dope man.

I would never, ever take a pill that looked like that.

Pills of it here are rare and expensive.

have you heard of any stimulant related overdoses recently? As in shit with fenty in it?

Nope, the shortage is affecting adderall XR also

It's a shortage I don't understand. Doctors are not very interested in prescribing it and as noted above, the black market people have been substituting Meth for awhile now.

Maybe the drug companies just aren't making enough money on it.

Great post, yeah the dark web is ridden with pressed pills that look like any other manufacturers brand adderall, lot are laced with Meth, some are designer 4-f mixtures. be safe oout there yall, test your stuff for Fent!!

Plenty of fake ones to go around so I wouldn’t sweat
Full of probably toxic heavy metals leeched in through synthesis steps or residual in reactors used in other synthesis, then used for the amp or meth, nasty synthetic by products they don't care to purify out.

Street drugs are not a sustainable drug for someone that doesn't want to desteoy their body.

QUESTION for everyone: is this shortage just in America or worldwide? I'm getting conspiracy minded and wondering if this is some sick move by our DEA and their cruel moronic drug war enabled bybthe christifascists that control congress despite over 30% of the country beinf non religious. I've also heard Adderall blamed for mass shootings we have monthly where some kid takes a military grade semi auto rifle he can buy at 18 and just slays as many random people as he can. They'll blame anything but the gun (ie adderall, video games, rap music) -disclaimer I'm pro gun just for the reasons if these potentially cruel sabatages on innocent citizens by the government

Our brain dead or sinister congress and DEA might A) think they are curbing amphetamine addiction or B) destroy people with ADHD so they can't function and fail in life or get funneled into meth and private prisons.

Any thoughts?

I think it's much more likely that it's just another shortage of something. There's been plenty of shortages involving a lot of different stuff over the past year or so, no need to blame malice when a simple run-of-the-mill fuckup related to labor and supply chain issues suffices

Yea this has happened before, I didn’t understand then and I don’t understand now.. Synthesizing Amphetamine should be like baking a cake for these people, it’s gotta come down to the drug being a low money maker these days compared to others on the market.
