Ashen Tree

“Underneath, spreading chestnut tree,
I sold you and you sold me."*

Soggy hearts broken,
Conscious traded unspoken.

Under scorching summer sun,
Our two bodies met as one.

Startled from a lucid dream,
Boneless now—we wait to bleed.

*Inspired by George Orwell's 1984. Upon rereading this story, this poem came into being.
First stanza is written by Orwell on page number, 252.
