About an hour after I woke up this morning, my lip went numb then it spread across the right side of my face. This has happened once before, a couple of years ago. I went to the ER last time it happened but - after waiting in line for hours - the numbness was gone by the time I saw a doctor. They couldn't tell me what happened.

Today, it started in exactly the same spot, on the right side of my mouth. I assume it will clear up in a couple of hours.

Any idea what could cause this?

No, haven't been to the dentist for ages. I do get chronic sinus infections though. My face is all blocked up today, particularly on the right hand side. Maybe the sinus infection spread down into my teeth or something?

Speak to your Dr about this is my advice.

There are a lot of reasons you could have facial numbness. As was mentioned above your nerves do go right across your face and if you’ve laid on your head funny you can crush them, like if you had your head on your hand with your knuckles digging into you your face.

Another reason could be your sinus issues. That’s definitely up there as to why it’s happening and moving. There are good videos on YouTube in how to clear your sinus’ out. May help.

Another is anxiety, I’ve seen it (and felt it myself) cause facial numbness that moves. Even if I don’t feel anxious it can happen.

Again, so many reasons it could be but best advice is to see your dr to rule out anything serious like maybe possible TIA although it doesn’t really sound like that, I’d still be wary of saying it wasn’t at all.

Do you have a history of teeth grinding, particularly at night? I do and I've experienced your symptoms and every other sort of face/jaw/mouth discomfort there is, pretty much. I figure mine is brought on by anxiety, same as my IBS and all my other abnorMALities.

I bought a mouth guard on Amazon quite a while back and it helps. Definitely takes getting used to though.

It's gone now. It lasted about an hour. Blowing my nose and clearing out my sinuses helped so I assume it is related. I'm tired of doctors and tests. I've had three MRI scans of my brain over the years for chronic headaches in my right temple. The only thing they found was inflammation in my trigeminal nerve which they said could be trigeminal neuralgia but they'd have to biopsy it to be sure and I don't want them cutting into my face.

When I say numb, I mean numb. There was no feeling whatsoever. It felt like I'd just had a novocaine injection.

@mal3volent

You have experienced total numbness in your face from teeth grinding?

I've never heard of that before.

There’s your reason. That would cause facial numbness without doubt. It would also cause lots of headaches. I’d advise you to wear sunglasses when you can because sunlight will be adding to your issues.

If you mean "total" in the exact literal sense then no, but its pretty bad, and it moves like you said. I assume it's from my teeth grinding because I feel it in such close proximity to when that happens. But there's a possibility it could be radiating from my preexisting shoulder issues.

So, yeah the numbness is a precursor to trigeminal. I have a major headache now. This is the final nail in the coffin. I am now 100% convinced I have trigeminal. This is a major step for me after years of not knowing what the fuck is wrong with my head.

Did those scans show up as "blank"? :ROFLMAO: Empty cavity in the skull?

For what it's worth: I actually know two people where this came on like real sudden and as if out of nowhere. The almost instant fix: massive doses of Prednisone.

I still have a couple of brain cells bouncing around upstairs, I'll have you know!

I am a human calculator and I will destroy you in Scrabble. My intelligence is autistic. I'm great at certain things, but I have massive blind spots.

Interesting. I've been thinking about getting a medicinal cannabis prescription because traditional painkillers (including opiates) do fucking nothing.

Prednisone, you say?

Can you tell me more about the people you know who developed TN?

Are they under 50?
Do they take drugs?

I am pretty convinced that meth caused my neurological disorder, but there isn't a lot of research done on the subject.

It first happened when I was using meth. I smoked a big rock and immediately had my first attack of TN.

Both were under 50 at the time.

No drugs. Although the one used to imbibe his fair share of alcohol on a fairly regular basis.

Both, however, had as some point been diagnosed as having auto-immune diseases and compromised immune systems. I'm not trying to make you panic. I'm just telling you what I know and have observed and witnessed in real life.

Don't you worry. I got a fucking weed plant outside here that just keeps growing and getting taller. Dunno what to do with it. But I was thinking: I also got more methanol lying around than I'll ever need. So if this useless fucking plant ever develops buds I'm game to crush them up and let them soak in methanol for a while and then boil the methanol off until I get a dark green oil which I'll then ship to you to test!

Strange. It is statistically quite rare at my age. This is one of the reasons I've not accepted the diagnosis until now. The numbness is too coincidental. Fuck typing this is hard. From what I understand, TN just gets worse and worse. I think it has the highest suicide rate of all medical conditions. ~25% of people with TN eventually kill themselves. It feels like someone is ramming a hot needle into my right temple. The worst thing about it is: it is constant. It's fucking exhausting after a while. I just want it to stop.

Weed helps somewhat, but I put my stash in a timelock box because I'm trying to do the right thing and now I don't have anything other than a bottle of red wine. Alcohol does not help. It does the opposite. I'm trying, quite unsuccessfully, to knock myself out.

Why are you growing weed if you don't even want it? Is it legal to grow a plant in SA? Or is it something that isn't enforced? Growing a plant in Australia is a huge no-no. I'd rather let someone else take the risk and pay for my buds.

They gave me this anti-migraine med for it called Sumatriptan, but that shit is awful. I don't like taking pills unless they get me high. The side effects from TN meds are horrible and they don't work that well. I'd rather just have some weed.

It's not mine. It was a gift to the girlfriend. She suffers from chronic pain and apparently also has fibromyalgia (I say "apparently" because these fucking doctors and specialists here seem to see her as an experiment and a testing ground) and somebody told her that this weed shit helps. That was the plan anyway. Somebody gave her edibles the other day and they helped for sure. But they're fucking potent. And she panicked. This is somebody who has not been proper drunk in their life so isn't used to that feeling of loss of control or floating or the room turning. I thought it was quite funny but she was genuinely panicking.

Honest to God: the only meds. that work for her and her pain and something similar to what you describe is Prednisone. I dunno why. It must be the cheapest med. on the market. And same with the other dude that sort of lost his face on the one side i.e. it kinda slipped down and went all numb. Dude couldn't talk properly (I actually thought he was pissed out of his bracket at the time). Couldn't keep his mouth closed proper on the one side. And his face was all swollen and numb on the one side. Looked like somebody had given him a smack in the face. I'm not making this up i.e. it wasn't something pleasant to see I'll tell you. Every time the dude had a sip of beer it'd come dribbling out the one side of his mouth. But as I say: he went for tests and was prescribed heroic (initial) doses of Prednisone and that was the end of that at the time. It did reoccur some years later though. Treatment was the same.

Dr. Fentanyl here has been trying to get the girlfriend here on patches (and if not on patches on my own very special home brewed batch of medication but which I fear has become far too concentrated due to evaporation to have any known benefit to humans). But if weed made her panic and she couldn't really steady herself and didn't like the feeling: I don't see my treatments working out too well! :ROFLMAO:

Is it legal to grow a plant in SA?
Yep. Full on legal. We can grow three plants legally (purportedly for personal consumption). But weed has just always been around here so unless you're taking the proverbial piss: law enforcement very rarely have bothered with it.

I'll post a pic. of this fucking plant i.e. I don't know where it's going from here (if anywhere). All I know is that it's getting taller and taller. Last year it did generate buds. I took them off and let them dry out and they sure looked like and smelled like weed to me. But not my thing i.e. I dislike everything about it from the smell to the feeling to everything else. Such is life and my luck huh! :ROFLMAO:

Just had a Seroquel and I fucking hate Seroquel, particularly when it is mixed with alcohol. Edibles are dangerous territory for the unaffiliated. You should tell your GF to start with a nibble. Full blown potheads have been known to freak out after eating a couple of cookies. My brother went to Amsterdam with his Mrs and they both lost their shit from a shake. He had dreadlocks at the time and would wake up in the middle of the night to smoke a bong or two just to get back to sleep.
