As some of you may have noticed, the new software has 'widgets' scattered about, which we've kept on the right sidebar by default. In these widgets we can add features such as the already existing "Latest Posts", "Forum Statistics" and "Who is Online". We have done a little bit of shuffle recently to get more consistency on the social media "Share This Page" widget that is at the bottom of most pages (either the last on the right sidebar or simply at the bottom). It's not on every page, because some places it doesn't make sense (like the list of forums). We are moving towards a layout that would provide you the general 'always there' stuff (Who is Online) at the bottom of relevant pages and the more regularly used widgets (Latest Posts) on the right sidebar. But we've claimed the top (in a few places) for the new 'Features' widget which is currently rotating through three important threads. When the 'Features' widget isn't top center, we will sometimes put it at the top of the right sidebar. We know this clips the image a bit, but it still gets your attention.

This isn't to detract from the nifty rotating 'hot threads' that CFC put together for us. If you've tried that one, you'll see he's got near a dozen threads linked in there which you can wait for it to cycle thru or simply pick on the dots to see a specific one. Then click on the text above the dots and it will take you right to one of those hot threads.

These are an effort to get more visibility for the real popular discussions, but this will continue to evolve. Your feedback is welcome, and we hope you enjoy the latest updates. And, if you notice things seem a bit wonky - let us know, it's possible we put something in the wrong place...or was in intentional

Can a registered user also write their own widgets?

You mean for personal use? Or for the site to use? Nothing to stop what one would do for themselves, though it may be limited in what the widget can access (based on user's permissions). As to something for the site, if it was done for us and integrated with Xenforo, one may as well make it available to anyone using Xenforo. There is a whole community of people making things - some get integrated into the base software, some are sold as add-ons. Free market, knock yourself out.
