It takes advantage of differences in solubility for different compounds to separate them, which allows you to spot test the different components of a drug mixture. Honestly pretty cool (though if one were serious about doing TLC, i bet you could source plates, the solvents, and a container elsewhere for cheaper (and in higher quality. I feel like a lot of drug testing kits feel flimsy like children's chemistry sets)
